Lay the foundation of safe run of subway train with a customized construction suitable to the characteristics by section

Upgraded Structure
The master plan, basic design and working design of the civil engineering facilities of Subway Line 1 of Gwangju Metro, divided to 12 sections have been finished from May 1994 to 1996.
The historical subway era has been opened by opening full 20.45km of Line 1 after opening 12.31km of the 1st section between Nokdong station and Sangmu station on 28th April 2004 and opening the 2nd section between Nokdong station and Pyungdong since started construction of 1-7 sections (road section in front of Sangmu New Town) in August 1996. Since the civil engineering facility is a frame of subway structure and a corner stone for safety, we have analyzed and applied cases of other cities from the stage of design and construction in order to improve the weak points and avoid trial and errors such that we are confident that the safety, constructability and economy have been significantly improved.

Construction Overview and Application of Cutting Edge Construction Method
The distance of civil engineering structure is 20.1km including 14.5km of double entrance sections, 3.4km of tunnel sections and 2.2km of bridges.
The sections where the tunnels were already constructed include Jeondae Hospital ~ Gu Doncheong ~ Geumnam Underground Shopping Center, Soochang Elementary School Area of Geumnamro 5 Ga, Yangdong Bokgae Commercial Street, Dolgogae, Youngsangang Underneath, and Honam Railway Underneath. The cross section of the tunnels for the sections of Jeondae Hospital ~ Geumnamro 4 Ga station (900m) were excavated at one time using excavating equipment instead of the current explosion method.
This construction method is a shield method which produces nearly no noise and vibration and was applied to the subway construction first time in Korea preventing safety accident and could be completed giving no convenience to neighbor commercial streets and buildings such that we are proud this construction method had a leading role for being applied to other subway constructions in Korea.
Rails to minimize noise and vibration and secure safety during of the train.
The vibration proof rail structure constructed in Line 1 of Gwangju Metro used sleepers and road beds whose materials are ultra high strength concrete material and also used thick dustproof pads on underneath of the sleeper in order to absorb vibration and noise produced during running of the train. It also maximized dustproof and low noise effect adding additional sponge pads and cross combined pads in order to absorb other vibration and noise and protect environment.
Rail fastenings used rubber clips which maximized elasticity using both hard and soft synthesized rubber and steel instead of steel clip and spring washers that there is no fear of damage, separation and departure of the train during repeated load of the train and it is safe comparing to other rail structures.
